Getting into the Halloween spirit every year can be so much fun, especially if you like to go out and take part in local celebrations. When you’re looking for rental homes, you want to make sure you like the neighborhood and its amenities, and that includes the holiday celebrations. Some towns take Halloween more seriously than others, however. We’ve compiled a list of towns and cities across the country which are famous for the biggest and best Halloween attractions in America, complete with listings so that you can check out nearby rentals. Check these places out if you’re looking to rent a home near people who love Halloween as much as you do: 

1. Salem, Massachusetts

Salem has some of the best Halloween attractions in America due to its historical place as the setting of the Salem Witch Trials. From walking tours to witchy shops, Salem really does have it all. Make sure not to miss the famous Witch House and Old Burying Point Cemetery

2. Sleepy Hollow, New York

Sleepy Hollow is the setting of Washington Irving’s famous short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” in which a headless horseman terrorizes the town. You can hear his story recounted by live performers during the Irving’s Legend event. If you’re looking for something a little less creepy, you might enjoy the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze in nearby Croton-on-Hudson.

3. Chattanooga, Tennessee

During October, Chattanooga because ChattaBOOga! Attend one of the nightly ghost tours or attend one of the town’s spine-chilling interactive storytelling experiences. If you’re looking for something a little more mild, Chattanooga provides other kinds of Halloween fun, too. You could always check out the neighborhood Halloween decorating contest or go trick-or-treating in the zoo. There’s something for everyone!

4. Buena Park, California

Like ChattaBOOga, Buena Park turns into BOO-uena Park during October, and it has some of the best Halloween attractions in America. You’ll definitely want to check out Knott’s Scary Farm, famous in SoCal for the sheer amount of different things to do and see. If you want something a little more less scary but still fun, you could always check out the Olde Tyme Fall Festival or the Silverado Days Festival instead.

5. Dearborn, Michigan

For a small town, Dearborn celebrates Halloween in a big way. During the town’s “Hallowe’en in Greenfield Village” event, 1,000 jack-o-lanterns light up the town. There’s food, hot drinks, and characters from Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz abound. Dearborn is also one of the best towns to trick-or-treat in across America, too.

6. Independence, Kansas

Independence throws a huge, week-long Halloween festival every year called “Neewollah,” which is “Halloween” spelled backwards. It’s such a well-known event that it has its own board of directors, headed by a “Generalissimo.” Neewollah has tons of different events every year, including a scarecrow building contest, a movie night, and a 5K run. It draws 70,000 people from around the country to Independence, truly making it an extraordinary and unique festival.    

7. St Helens, Oregon

As the backdrop of the Disney movie “Halloweentown,” St. Helens is forever part of Halloween history. Because of this, for the entire month of October, St. Helens transforms itself into Halloweentown for its Spirit of Halloweentown events. Some of their attractions include a pumpkin lighting, a haunted hotel, a costume contest, and a witch dance. If you’re a fan of the movie, there’s no better place to really get into the Halloween experience.   

8. Laconia, New Hampshire

What better way to spend October than in scenic New Hampshire? Laconia is famous for its massive NH Pumpkin Festival, which draws tens of thousands of people from all over the region. The festival includes food events, haunted houses, costume contests, and tons of other spooky attractions.

9. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is well known for its love of celebrations such as Mardi Gras, but it also goes all the way for Halloween. There are haunted tours in the French Quarter, live music and art shows, plenty of spooky cemetery experiences, and tons of costume shops where you can pick out the perfect getup. This famous city definitely has some of the best Halloween attractions in America.  

10. St. Louis, Missouri

This city is just bursting with the Halloween spirit. St. Louis has a long, long list of Halloween activities for pretty much everyone. By using their categories list, you can pick out exactly the type of attraction you’d like to take part in. Some of the most popular ones include the Halloween festival at Six Flags, the Fox Ghost Tours, the Booterfly House, and the haunted wagon rides.
